Fabio da Silva

SMALLING UNFAZED BY FABIO CHALLENGE

Chris Smalling has said that he is not unfazed by challenge for places provided by players like Fabio da Silva. The 20-year-old went to Old Trafford this summer for £10million from Fulham in one of the most eyebrow-raising transfers so far after agreeing a deal back in January.

It has been a meteoric rise to success for the young centre-back, who was plucked from obscurity by Roy Hodgson two years ago to move to Craven Cottage from non-league Maidstone.

FABIO AWARE OF FAN'S EXPECTATIONS

Manchester United fullback Fabio da Silva says that he is aware of the great expectations on himself and twin brother Rafael.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson expects both players to be big stars at Old Trafford.

And Fabio da Silva said: "The night before I first moved here, I never slept. I was wondering what would happen. Here everything is different, but we are adapting.

"The pressure is something you feel. It can be daunting, but it also shows people respect you.

IRWIN TIPS FABIO DA SILVA

With Manchester United set to tour the US later this month, Denis Irwin has tipped Fabio Da Silva to be part of the key squad.

Irwin said "The squad will be strong. Giggsy, Nevs, Scholes will be here."

"Van der Sar will be here. [John] O'Shea, [Jonny] Evans, [Darren] Fletcher, [Daron] Gibson, [Dimitar] Berbatov, [Michael] Owen, [Owen] Hargreaves, [Federico] Macheda. [New signing, Mexican striker Javier] Hernandez will be out here. [Danny] Welbeck."

New contract for Fabio

Manchester United defender Fabio Da Silva has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2014.

The Brazilian teenager has made 13 appearances for the Old Trafford outfit this season and is viewed as a major talent for the future.

"Fabio is a natural footballer who will make a fine Manchester United player in the years to come," said Sir Alex Ferguson.

O'SHEA'S LOSS TO BE FABIO DA SILVA'S GAIN

Manchester United defender John O'Shea is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a blood clot problem.

United have had significant problems in defence this season, with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Wes Brown, Rafael Da Silva, Fabio Da Silva and Gary Neville all facing significant spells out injured, and O'Shea has not featured since Republic of Ireland's World Cup play-off defeat to France in mid-November.

DA SILVA TWINS WILL BE STARS

Albiston suggests the diminutive youngster, one half of the Da Silva twins with brother Fabio, has all the ability in the world to become a top player for Manchester United in the future. Albiston has had a sports bet online on the twins breaking into the United first team.

FABIO DA SILVA IN CARLING CUP SQUAD

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher returns from suspension for the clash at Eastlands. The Scotland skipper will almost certainly replace Paul Scholes in central midfield, where he may be joined by Darron Gibson.

Brazilian twins Fabio and Rafael Da Silva are also under consideration by Sir Alex Ferguson while Dimitar Berbatov is doubtful with a dead leg.

2010: THE YEAR OF RAFAEL AND FABIO DA SILVA

The presence of Rafael and then Fabio Da Silva on the United team-sheet in the past five days could be a sign of things to come.

The first half of the season for both twins was blighted by injury, but their involvement in the Wigan Athletic and Leeds United matches offers encouragement for the year ahead. Rafael scored his second goal for the club in the 5-0 romp against the Latics, while Fabio was arguably one of the Reds' better performers during Sunday's FA Cup defeat.

FERGUSON SHOCKED BY DA SILVA DISPLAY

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson did not hold back in criticising his players as Manchester United were dumped out of the FA Cup by League One side Leeds. Ferguson said Leeds had deserved the victory as their rivals won 1-0 in a big upset at Old Trafford.

"I didn't expect that performance, it was shocking. I've no complaints about the result," said Ferguson. But he did complain about the lack of injury time added, describing the five minutes as "an insult to the game".
